We all love our furry friends, but sometimes the messes they make can be overwhelming. This post is all about the best ways you can keep your house clean with cats.
1. Brush your cat regularly
The more you brush you cat, the less they shed and accumulate fur balls around your house.
Grooming your cat consistently is a great first step in preventing a lot of fur build up around your house in the first place.
So brush you cat!
2. Sweep and vacuum every week
Even brushing your cat regularly can’t stop all shedding. So to keep your house clean with cats, you’ll want to sweep and vacuum once a week.
Try to also get into those easily overlooked places like in tight corners, behind the tv where all the cables are and other crevices throughout your home. A lot of your cat’s fur will end up accumulating in those places and over time they will build up a lot.
3. Clean feeding area every week
I’ve seen some cats who are really clean and straightforward when they eat.
Then I’ve seen cats who will literally scoop their food with their paws, dump it on the ground next to it or even try to eat it right out of their own paw!
Regardless, you should be cleaning your cat’s feeding area at least once a week.
Wash its food bowl, water bowl and mat. It’s also not healthy for your cat to not be washing those dishes pretty regularly.
If you don’t like the mess, trust me you cat doesn’t either.
4. Clean your cat’s litter box
We all know that smell when your cat’s litter box hasn’t been cleaned in a while.
Stay on top of it and change the litter before it ever gets to that point.
If you have to manually scoop out your cat’s excrements, make sure you are doing that at least once a day.
I also recommend putting a mat in front of your cat’s litter box that is specifically designed to catch litter. Litter tends to get stuck on the bottom of our cat’s feet when they use the bathroom, so having that mat will help to catch most of it before they start tracking it all throughout your house.
Also be strategic about where you put your cat’s litter box.
The best place you can put a litter box is out of sight and away from heavily trafficked areas. You can hide it behind a wall or in the bathroom, but also be sure you cat can easily access it any time.
5. Get the right litter box
The one we use is the PetSafe ScoopFree litter box you can find on Amazon. It’s a self-cleaning litter box that automatically rakes the litter after you cat uses the bathroom. It also keeps track of how many times it has gone in since the last time you cleaned it out.
Getting a self-cleaning litter box is seriously the best thing you can do.
It saves you so much time, and it does a much better job at concealing the smell. It also looks a lot nicer in your home.
6. Use lint rollers
We have a lint roller in just about every single room in our house. You can never have too many! The biggest thing I use lint rollers for is to get fur off of my clothes.
But I also use lint rollers to clean my sofa!
A lot of people don’t stop to think about how much fur collects on their sofas, but it does.
If you’re still not sure, just run a lint roller over it and then let me know what you find.
Lint rollers are a great idea for keeping fur off your sofa and your clothes.
7. Wash bedding and blankets
It’s so crucial to wash your bedding regularly. If your cat loves getting into bed with you, you must be cleaning your comforter or duvet as well as your sheets.
Just think about your cat using the litter box, then they come out and hop onto your bed. Yikes!
Cats are pretty clean animals and are good at cleaning themselves, but they can still track a lot of unwanted germs around.
8. Clean windows
Cats love looking out the window. Which is also why we always find those cute little nose prints all over them.
Remember to clean your windows every couple of weeks or so to keep them looking crystal clear.
9. Change your air filters
Cats shed and allergens get into the air. It’s always a good idea to regularly change your air filters in your house, especially if you have allergies.
