This post is all about best homemaking tips for beginners.
Being a homemaker is harder than it sounds. Most people dream of owning a house, cleaning and cooking for their husband every night. But realistically, it’s not all fun and games.
Sometimes you just don’t feel like cooking and other times, the laundry piling up on the bed is not something you want to do right now…or ever.
But I’m here to tell you it’s okay, we all feel like that sometimes. The key is to not dwell in that feeling.
Being a homemaker IS an incredible thing and a very rewarding role for any woman to have. It can bring meaning and purpose to life and be extremely fulfilling. Some homemakers work full time jobs and for others, being a homemaker is their full time job. And when you throw kids in the mix, it can start to feel overwhelming. It can be hard to navigate being a homemaker, especially in the beginning, but it’s not so bad once you break it down.
I don’t have kids yet, but I do work a full time job while also being a homemaker. I’m sure I will have some new tips for you once I do have kids in the mix, but for now, here’s everything I’ve learned in the last year of being a homemaker that has worked for me and my top tips for beginning homemakers.
This post is all about best homemaking tips for beginning homemakers.
12 Tips For Beginning Homemakers:
1. Make your bed every morning
Set yourself up for success by simply making your bed every morning. By making your bed first thing, you’ve already set the tone for the day and accomplished something that will create a clear headspace for you. You will feel wayyy better if you make your bed each morning. A simple, yet very important habit to start!
2. Get out of your pajamas
Once you make your bed, get into some clothes! You don’t need to dress like you’re going to the office, but make yourself look nice and presentable.
This is just another one of those psychological hacks that will put your mind in the right headspace. Getting dressed will make you feel good about yourself and give you motivation to be productive throughout the day. It’s also great in case you need to run out to the store or see anybody unexpected that day.
3. Never go to bed with a dirty kitchen
This is hard, I must admit, and I am not always successful with it, but it is a good goal to have. There’s nothing worse than a bunch of dishes piling up. You will just feel discouraged and lose your motivation at that point.
Do yourself a favor (and I’m preaching to myself), just do the dishes every night before you go to bed and be done with it! You will sleep well knowing your kitchen is clean and when you start the next day, you can come to a beautiful kitchen and focus on the things that really matter.
4. Exercise
This is science! Exercising regularly improves your mood and energy levels. Working out every day is good for fighting depression, preventing laziness, burning fat and building muscle and boosts your productivity because you will feel energized and accomplished.
You need to make sure you are taken care of if you are going to take care of your home.
5. Have a cleaning schedule that you stick to
It’s always a great idea to have a specific cleaning schedule that you stick to every day. Write it out what you will clean every Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and so on.
This way you’re not just waking up and aimlessly deciding what you need to do. Start each day with a game plan of tasks that you know you need to accomplish that day.
6. Know your budget
I don’t know about you, but I love shopping for my home! Maybe too much… That’s why it’s important to create a budget and stick to it. Figure out how much you will spend each week on groceries, home necessities and decor, then shop with intention.
It can be tempting to spend more than you have when shopping, there’s always so many cute home decor that grabs my attention while I’m out! But if you stay focused and know exactly how much you have to spend that week or month, then it will be easier to be decisive about what you buy and stick to your budget.
7. Pick up as you go
In the moment, you probably won’t feel like picking up those socks, or throwing the piece of garbage in the trash…but DO IT. It’s way easier to do that, than it is to motivate yourself to clean up a WHOLE messy living room.
Picking up as you go is the oldest trick in the book, but somehow probably the most hard. Create this little habit and you will already be crushing the homemaking game.
8. Laundry never ends, but it doesn’t have to be dreadful
Laundry is a reality for all of us. Right when you’ve finished folding and putting away, it seems there’s another load waiting for you.
It’s okay though. It’s not that bad! Get your cleaning schedule and plan your days for laundry and make it fun! I like to listen to music and dance while I fold laundry. Hah! I also like to talk on the phone or listen to podcasts. Just make the best of it and before you know it, it’s done.
9. Prep your meals
I LOVE meal prepping. I don’t know what it is. Just sit down with your trusty cookbook or go on Pinterest, and plan out what you will make that week.
Here’s a tip: be strategic with the meals you plan.
I’ve learned the hard way by deciding on meals that looked really good but were totally unrelated to each other. For example, I’d choose to make chicken enchiladas, sun-dried tomato and mozzarella pasta, and hamburgers. I’d buy the ingredients for all of those meals and then food would go bad in the fridge because I didn’t use everything up in time.
Being strategic would look like choosing to make chicken enchiladas, southwest chicken and rice bowls, and chicken pot pie. With meals like these, you are buying less ingredients that you can use again in each meal. It saves money by buying less at the store and also not wasting food that would have gone bad.
10. Don’t forget your hobbies
One major pro of being a homemaker is you make your own schedule. I know it can be harder if you have kids, but it’s still possible to make sometime for yourself. And one way to do that is with a hobby.
What is it you love to do? Or is there something you’ve always wanted to try or learn? These are some unique hobby ideas to get you thinking.
I like to bellydance and have one private class online once a week. It makes me happy and also keeps me in shape. Find what makes you happy and make sure to make time for it!
11. Organize your home
Being a homemaker will be a lot easier if you can keep things organized. Have a place for everything and don’t collect clutter you don’t need or use. It can be hard, but know when it’s time to get rid of something and only keep what you actually use.
There are a lot of great organization systems you can find in stores or get inspired online. Organize your pantry, cooking spices, toiletries, closet, etc. An organized home means an organized mind.
12. Organize your mind
Another great way to organize your mind is with lists! I’m a HUGE list maker.
You can make physical lists on paper or create them in your phone. I like to use the notes app in my phone to make lists.
These are some examples of lists you can have:
- Day-to-Day Tasks
- Meal Ideas
- Dinner Guest Menus
- Meal Prep
- Grocery List
- Shopping List
- Gift Ideas
And the list goes on. Anything you’re keeping in your head, get it out onto a list and you will thank yourself a million times over.
